Kamal was born in Ethiopia and migrated to Victoria with his mother, three brothers and two sisters in 2003 to escape civil war and conflict.  In June 2011 he was announced as the ambassador of Football Federation Victoria's "United Through Football" program, whose aim is to support those who have recently arrived in Australia from areas such as the Horn of Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan and Burma.

Football Empowerment was established in 2016 as a Not-For-Profit sports organisation based in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne that builds and maintains a support mechanism for the young  people that possess the ambition and drive to be successful in life through sports, see https://footballempowerment.org.au/
